38th Macao International Music Festival writes a new chapter of musical exchange under the theme “Silk Resonances”
MACAU, September 4 - Organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym), the 38th Macao International Music Festival (MIMF) will be held from 2 October to 29 November. Themed “Silk Resonances”, this edition of the MIMF will feature 10 programmes presented by world-renowned musicians and emerging young talents, one music camp and 12 “Floating Notes Across the City” activities, covering Chinese opera, western opera, contemporary masterpieces and symphonic concerts, among others. Drawing inspiration from the Maritime Silk Road, the MIMF offers a musical feast that blends with the cultural encounters along the Silk Road, and promotes mutual learning and dialogue between Eastern and Western civilizations. A dialogue across time and space: the centenary of the opera Turandot and a new adaptation of My Grand View Garden
This edition of the Festival kicks off with the My Grand View Garden – Yue Opera by the Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Troupe. Led by first-class actress Chen Lijun, this production combines delicate, melodious singing with modern stage design, allowing the audiences to indulge themselves in a dream where traditional opera and modern aesthetics intertwine.
Marking the centenary of its world premiere, the MIMF will present Turandot - Opera in Three Acts by Giacomo Puccini, directed by international superstar Jackie Chan in his directorial debut, infusing Puccini’s masterpiece with Eastern essence through the power and beauty of martial arts, and showcasing artistic brilliance across time and space.
Internationally acclaimed conductor Tan Dun conducts two grand musical banquets; young Macao musicians share the same stage
Internationally acclaimed composer and conductor Tan Dun will join hands with the China National Symphony Orchestra and Chorus to present Tan Dun Conducts Beethoven’s Ninth and Nine, creating a dialogue across time and space between Beethoven’s classic Symphony No. 9 and the work inspired in ancient Eastern mythology Nine. The concert Tan Dun Conducts Mozart and Beethoven will open with Beethoven's Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus.
In order to further leverage the Festival in developing musical talents, several young Macao musicians participate in this year’s Festival, including two emerging local string musicians, Nina Wong and Hoi Yan Lok who collaborate with Maestro Tan Dun in Mozart's Double Concerto for Violin and Viola; and the joint performance of young Macao pianist Chan Chon Teng and musicians of the Macao Orchestra in the concert Bravo Macao! dedicated to the city, showcasing the vitality of the new generations.
Brazilian body percussion by Barbatuques showcases creative dynamism and Portuguese string music offers poetic sense and romance
The year 2026 marks the China-Brazil Cultural Year. Supported by the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in the Macao Special Administrative Region and the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Federative Republic of Brazil, the concert Brazilian Body Beats by Barbatuques will showcase creative body percussion by transforming heartbeats, clapping, stamping and vocals into a surging rhythm. In addition, the Lisboa String Trio and Sofia Vitória from Portugal will present the concert Concrete Songs and Other Stories, blending classical refinement, jazz improvisation and global musicality. Through the dialogue of guitar, double bass, sitar and captivating female vocals, this concert will present the charm of Portuguese musical tradition.
Launch of “Lang Lang – Beyond Boundaries Series”
Internationally renowned piano maestro Lang Lang will present the concert Lang Lang in Recital: Iberian Rhapsody, offering the audience a magnificent musical feast. In addition, Oscar-winning visual artist Richard Taylor was invited to engage in a cross-disciplinary dialogue with Lang Lang. Simultaneously, a Piano Camp will also be held, providing opportunities for local young pianists and musicians to improve their performance skills and broaden their artistic horizons. The series of events connects different art fields through performances, music education and cross-disciplinary exchange, bringing a rich and diverse musical and cultural experience.
Macao Orchestra presents Baroque concert at the Cathedral
Laurence Cummings, a highly acclaimed conductor in the British ancient music scene, will join hands with the Macao Orchestra and with countertenor Cameron Shahbazi, to present the rigorous, meticulous and ethereal sonority of the Baroque era.
